A Mayor for the People of Berkeley

The first question that most people usually ask me is - after serving as Mayor of Berkeley from 1994 to 2002, why would you ever want to do that again? For years I have been committed to making our community the best it can be, so it was natural to remain involved after I left the Office of Mayor. Over the past few years, I have watched and attended Council meetings, read the reports, and talked to people from all over the City, and I am alarmed by what I am seeing and hearing.

Berkeley has become a deeply divided community. The Berkeley we know and love is fast disappearing - buried under poor development, people are saying they won’t speak out because no one listens anyway, storefronts are empty, Downtown is a mess, secret deals are thrust upon the public, crime is up, construction is encroaching on our priceless open space. That’s why I am running for Mayor again.

The reality I face is that this election will be a hard road. My opponent is a ‘Sacramento Politician’ who has clearly demonstrated that he has little regard for public participation and neighborhoods. He fully understands how to use power and respond to the developer and other special interests that have gained so much influence over our community. I will push back with determination. I hope that I have your support, because you are the most effective force there is when you are standing neighbor-to-neighbor. The power of your unified votes is enormous.

You know me as a hard worker. I have the experience, vision, and energy to bring us together to protect what is valuable and beautiful about our community, and to make positive changes for our future and that of our children. Together, we are unstoppable. Let’s take back our government on November 4th and move forward in creating a better quality of life throughout our wonderful community.
